Women in Construction Week: Maria Coartney

It’s National Women in Construction Week, and we’re highlighting women here at Sellen to ask about their experience in the industry, what they enjoy most about their roles and advice for the next generation. Read below to hear about how Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) Coordinator, Maria Coartney, gained interest in the industry and what she enjoys most about working at Sellen.

How did you get involved in the construction industry?
I was intrigued by it, and I knew some people in the industry that shared more insight on the VDC role. It seemed like a fun and interesting position, so I decided to give it a try.

What’s the most rewarding aspect about your job?
The fact that with the use of technology, we are able to produce drawings that help the field with construction, as well as identify potential conflicts that can be resolved prior to the beginning of construction. Another rewarding aspect of the job is seeing the things we put into drawings come to life.

What do you enjoy most about working for Sellen?
The company culture ‒ Sellen feels like a company that cares for its employees. I also enjoy the people, and I have had the opportunity to work with many smart and talented individuals. Everyone at Sellen is happy to help, share their knowledge and collaborate with one another.

What’s your advice for the next generation of women in construction?
Believe in yourself, ask questions, be humble and be curious!
