National Apprentice Week 2017: Jason Dock

We will be highlighting a different apprentice each day for National Apprentice Week 2017. Today’s apprentice: Jason Dock, a carpenter apprentice at Block 20. He joined Sellen’s team in June 2016.

How did you end up at Sellen?
“I was working at another company where safety wasn’t as much of a focus as it is at Sellen. I don’t mind hard work, as long as it’s safe. I also wanted to have more meaningful time with my wife and child, and Sellen let me do that with steady hours and good wages. I enjoy what I do and I come home happy.”

Who are your mentors and how have they helped you?
“Jason Barnwell showed me how to be resourceful and took the time to teach me how to do things properly. Another would be Tim McKey, who provided a good example of how to work hard with a great attitude. My foreman, Jimmy Reyes, also gave me detailed training and has helped me excel. It’s really great how Sellen invests in their employees.”

How has the apprentice program made you better at your trade?
“It taught me all aspects of the industry. It’s a comprehensive program that provides a learning experience for all facets of carpentry work. Everything I’ve learned in my apprenticeship class has applied to the work I do. It’s a great way to make you a versatile asset.”

What inspires you to be at your best every day?
“I want to do the best job I can so that I provide for my family. My goal is to learn how to build the marvels that Sellen is known for building.”

What’s the best part of your job?
“Continuing to gain knowledge and wisdom every day.”

What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?
“Keep your job box organized — something my foreman Jimmy Reyes told me. Keeping a job box organized makes your whole team more efficient.”
