National Apprentice Week 2017: Andrew Rackowski
We will be highlighting a different apprentice each day for National Apprentice Week 2017. Today’s apprentice: Andrew Rackowski, a laborer at the Spheres project. Andrew joined Sellen in 2015.
What drew you to the construction industry?
I knew a general foreman at the Block 14 project and he told me what a great opportunity it was. I moved my family across the country, got signed up with the union and enrolled in the apprenticeship program.
Do you have any mentors you look up to?
I’ve had a lot of great general foremen. They have really showed me the ropes and taught me a lot.
How has being in the apprentice program helped you become better in your trade?
I get to go for continuing education through the Northwest Laborers Employers Training program in Kingston. I get hands-on training for things I don’t get to do in a typical day.
What inspires you to be at your best every day?
My family! My wife, our son and our baby girl due in March.
What’s the best part of your job?
The best part is getting to see a project come to life. The Spheres are truly one-of-a-kind.
What would you tell people that are considering a career in the industry?
It’s a great way to earn a living. Work hard and it will pay off.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
Keep learning. Nobody knows everything.
