Leveraging New Technologies

In our industry, the tools of the trade have evolved over the last seven decades. Sellen’s Virtual Design and Construction (VDC) team is at the forefront of emerging technology in the construction industry, exploring and developing new, cost-effective tools that have the potential to change the way we work together.

These tools include Augmented Reality (AR), Mixed Reality (MR) and Virtual Reality (VR). Intuitive, immersive new technologies like these enable various stakeholders to fully experience their new building before construction begins and provide instant feedback on the design in a way that simply wasn’t possible with traditional design documents. This enhanced level of participation has the potential to result in significant savings, produce more efficient facilities, and generate enthusiasm and buy-in from end-users.

These tools enable project teams to communicate more effectively with wider audiences. We are continuously seeking opportunities to collaborate with technologically focused companies and integrate exciting new technologies into our processes with the aim of providing clients with more value.

Augmented Reality (AR): The real environment, enhanced with computer-generated elements or information. Spatial AR displays computer-generated elements directly into the real environment, while see-through AR superimposes computer graphics on top of real environment.

Mixed Reality (MR): Sometimes called Hybrid Reality, this technology includes computer-generated elements that interact in real-time as the viewer moves around. MR allows for digital graphics to function much the same as something in the real world.

Virtual Reality (VR): VR can be a semi-immersive or fully immersive computer-generated experience. Semi-immersive VR displays a limited viewing area for the user and is used with tablets or smartphones. Immersive VR fills the user’s field of vision in head-mounted displays.
